It's hard to tell whether the stories of Cruise being a nice guy is all part of PR. Most likely though he is a decent guy, but absurdly eccentric and prone to erratic behavior that his handlers try to keep a leash on
Confession: I’ve seen the movie 8 times. I was so captivated by it, it plays me like Pete Townsend plays his axe in Won’t Get Fooled again, which was brilliantly used in the dogfight training scene.
But Cruise is in a very cloistered world of Scientology and Hollyweird. And body guards on a military base. Just think if he came out for a half hour and just talked with everyone, it would have endeared people and they would have done anything for the guy, adhered to whatever requests.
I agree. Many of us thought that at the very least he would be at that opening meeting I discussed in the essay. Not to make it an autograph session or selfie-taking opportunity, but to simply say hi and heck, show a little thanks for being able to come there and film scenes.
“First, thanks for allowing me to interrupt your normal routine, it means a lot that I can come here and use the facilities like this. Don’t let my reputation and fame distract from you have to do. I’ll try to stay out of your way”.
That would set up the circle of respect and when needed, distance that he required.
There was the incident when someone threw water on him outside of a premiere in London, he looked so disappointed as he asked “why would do this?” so perhaps he’s more cautious given that type of event. From what I understand the reporter asking him the question squirted him. Cruise, to his credit, didn’t lose his mind over the cheap shot.
That said, I think some type of ice breaker with the base would have been appropriate.
Great stuff! I worked for a project he set up for the FDNY in 07 and he always sent us staff a huge gift basket and Christmas cards each Christmas. Funny thing was , I was looking at that card last night!
I was with the “Sluggers” of VF-103 in summer of 1989 as a midshipman, a few years after Top Gun was released. A few of the pilots had been involved in the filming from prior tours. Truthfully, they did not say good things about him because of an incident in which he was pulled under by his chute during the Goose water scene. Cruise had to be rescued by navy divers and the impression he left as a result on some of the sailors was not great. Hearsay to me but they didn’t like him.
Saw parts of *Maverick,* lost interest before it premiered upon learning the story left the Enemy "undefined." To me the whole event felt maudlin, and considering the carnival which replaced Reagan it's been confirmed a dozen times over that incarnation of America no longer exists, and may never again.
Guess TG3 will be about Mav training the next generation of AI drones.
In the intrusion of celestial ego on a small mountain town, people flocked to get the attention and autographs of the big stars of True Grit. The adoration proved annoyance to Glen Campbell who ended up in stitches in jail. Rocks ain’t the only hard things in mining towns.
