The bigger picture is how corporate greed Is control everything we eat, drink, and do in our own society. Our children and being to be analogy thinking with out the human connection. Just like robo cop the wanted a mindless computer to control. I believe in advancement because if it was not going further I am pretty sure I would be dead because computers control my insulin that keeps me alive. My only hope we keep our soul active as we advance just like 2043.
There is a throwaway line somewgere in the movie about the profitability of Omnicorps private prisons and privatized spaceflights. When the movie was made, these were jokes about the 80s trends of corporations taking over areas of government control, rather then the awful reality we currently live with (particularly for-profit private prisons.)
"I'd buy that for a dollar!"
Except that they had cheaper gas in Robocop 🤣🤣
Great piece
Part of the genius is that OCP itself is ambiguous - it’s not the Evil Empire. Murphy saves the Old Man at the end, and doesn’t try to bring down OCP.
The only opposition to OCP is when the cops go on strike, which leads to carnage.
It’s never made clear what year it is set.
It's a little amusing that Verhoeven is an anti-authoritarian figure but faced accusations of being a fascist because he made Starship Troopers.
Excellent piece!
Thank you Adam.

You never played Nuclear War? The card game of planetary annihilation? Or its expansion? Great fun.

“Verhoeven cleverly subverts the medium to expose the rotten core of the capitalist project” - people who are suspicious of the capitalist project.
“I love Verhoeven’s movies. The bad guys get got every time” - people who don’t really care about capitalism and think commies are gay.
“I might buy another Bentley this week”. - Paul Verhoeven.
